Caeremoniale Romanum

Who was Mons. Léon Gromier?

Léon Gromier (1879–1965) was a French prelate, known in ecclesiastical circles above all as an eminent rubricist and liturgist, as well as a canon and altarist of St Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican. A Roman in spirit, he was known as a cultured, well-educated man who deeply respected sound and authentic ecclesiastical traditions. Although, through no fault of his own, he was never admitted to the college of papal masters of ceremonies (a position he greatly aspired to and dreamed of), he was an unrivalled expert on the apostolic ceremonial, as demonstrated by his opus magnum: Commentaire du Caeremoniale Episcoporum (1959).

No scholarly biography of Mons. Gromier has yet been published. The principal source is a study available on the French liturgical website Cérémoniaire, prepared by an anonymous person who knew the prelate well and made considerable efforts to discover or reconstruct as much information about his life as possible (including consultations with the Office for the Liturgical Celebrations of the Supreme Pontiff). The second source is the entry in the French version fo Wikipedia, also prepared by someone who must have had some knowledge of the person and activities of Mons. Gromier.

Obituary notice for Mons. Gromier in Annuaire Pontifical Catholique from 1927 (page 691).

Rather than repeat these two sources (which can easily be read with the help of translation tools), especially the first, which is documented with great care, we present the key information in clear tables. These should provide a sufficient overview of Mons. Léon Gromier and make it possible to consult his most important publications, some of which have been available online for some time.
