Caeremoniale Romanum

Papal Holy Week

Between 1869 and 1871, a monumental work on the Roman Council (First Vatican Council) entitled Actes et histoire du Concile Oecuménique de Rome was published under the editorship of Victor Frond and the efforts of publisher Abel Pilon. It was divided into 8 lavishly illustrated and sizable volumes, one of which was devoted entirely to papal ceremonies.

Its author was Honoré Fisquet (1818-1883), author of the study La France Pontificale (Paris 1866), a well-known French historian, writer and biographer. The title of the French scholar’s work on the papal liturgy fully reflects its content: Histoire liturgique et descriptives des Chapelles Papales tenues pendant l’anné dans les diverses églises de Rome (“Liturgical and descriptive history of the Papal Chapels held during the year in the various churches of Rome”).

In principle, the content did not differ from other works of this type (e.g., Barbier de Montault or Cancellieri), however, it was enriched with exceptional illustrations (oleo-prints) by Vincenzo Marchi, which show the papal ceremonies of Holy Week and the celebrations of the Ascension, Corpus Christi, St. Paul the Apostle and the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It is with great pleasure and in rich audiovisual form that we present these works.
