This publication is a posthumous collection of his writings dedicated, as the title suggests, to papal and sacred antiquities, rites, liturgical practices, and the ceremonies of the Roman Church. Through his work in the Roman Curia, his familiarity with papal institutions, and his historical-liturgical interests, Rocca left behind a valuable record of knowledge regarding the traditions, offices, and practices of the Roman Church at the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries.

The first edition of the collection appeared in Rome in 1719 under the title F. A second Roman edition from 1745, published by Faustus Amidei at the Bernabò and Lazzarini printing house, was released under an altered title: Thesaurus pontificiarum sacrarumque antiquitatum, necnon rituum, praxium ac cærimoniarum (…). This two-volume edition featured numerous copperplate illustrations. The expanded title also lists topics related to the Vatican Library, its prefects, librarians, and custodians, as well as additional treatises and essays concerning specific biblical and ecclesiastical-historical issues. The work serves as a valuable source for research into the history of the liturgy, papal ceremonial, ecclesiastical antiquities, and the organization of the institutions of the Holy See.

Of particular value to researchers of papal liturgy are treatises devoted to the Pope receiving Holy Communion at the throne, the manner in which the Eucharist was carried before the Pope during solemn processions, the papal tiara, and the practices and rites associated with the canonization of saints.

Thesaurus pontificiarum sacrarumque antiquitatum, necnon rituum, praxium ac caeremoniarum (1745) [tomus I]Download

Thesaurus pontificiarum sacrarumque antiquitatum, necnon rituum, praxium ac caeremoniarum (1745) [tomus II]Download

I. Sacrarum Caeremoniarum sive Rituum Ecclesiasticorum Sanctae Romanae Ecclesiae libri tres of Joseph Catalani [1750-1751]

A critical edition of the papal ceremonial compiled by Agostino Patrizi Piccolomini, with the collaboration of Johannes Burchard, in 1488 (De caeremoniis Curiae Romanae libri tres), and subsequently published in print by Cristoforo Marcello in Venice in 1516 (Rituum ecclesiasticorum sive sacrarum caerimoniarum S.S. It is a liturgical book containing the rites and ceremonies performed by bishops and other clergy authorized to conduct them. The text of the pontifical was revised and published by order of Clement VIII and subsequently underwent further revision during the pontificate of Urban VIII. Giuseppe Catalani prepared a three-volume edition of the work, originally published in Rome between 1738 and 1740, supplementing it with extensive prolegomena and historical, liturgical, and canonical commentaries. His study also took into account various manuscript traditions, citing ancient pontifical rites, including those used by popes, in the appendices.

The work constitutes an invaluable source for the study of the history of pontifical liturgy, the evolution of rites of ordination, consecration, and blessing, and the shaping of Roman liturgical practice. By drawing upon early manuscripts and historical rite variants, Catalani’s commentary enables one to trace the development of the Roman Church’s liturgical tradition and serves as a vital tool for comparative research into liturgical books and episcopal ceremonies. It is also a significant source for analyzing the relationship between the evolution of Roman Rite liturgical books, intended for use throughout the Latin Church, and earlier liturgical traditions or the specific books of the Roman Curia. Furthermore, the commentary discusses ritual traditions specific to papal liturgy, offering greater insight into its place within the broader context of the development of Roman liturgical books.

Pontificale romanum in tres partes distributum (1850-1852) [tomus I]Download

Pontificale romanum in tres partes distributum (1850-1852) [tomus II]Download

Pontificale romanum in tres partes distributum (1850-1852) [tomus III]Download

IV. Joachim Nabuco, Ius Pontificalium. Introductio in Caeremoniale Episcoporum [1956]

An excellent, comprehensive legal-liturgical study devoted to traditional pontifical and episcopal ceremonial. Bishop Joachim Nabuco—an expert on papal liturgy and a consultor to the Sacred Congregation of Rites, among other roles, analyzes the regulations of the Caeremoniale Episcoporum within the broad context of canon law, the history of ecclesiastical institutions, and the privileges and prerogatives associated with the various ranks of the church hierarchy. A distinctive feature of the work is its systematic approach to the topics discussed, which enables the reader to move beyond the mere interpretation of rubrics and grasp the legal foundations of the traditional ceremonial order.

The first book, De personis, is dedicated to persons, their dignities, rights, and privileges. It opens with a discussion of supreme ecclesiastical authority and those who share in its prerogatives, with particular emphasis on the Pope, cardinals, and other ranks of the ecclesiastical hierarchy. The second book, De rebus, covers matters relating to prelatial and pontifical vestments, insignia, liturgical furnishings, major churches, and ecclesiastical heraldry. The author explains both the prevailing norms and their historical context, drawing upon papal documents, decrees of Roman congregations, provisions of canon law, and liturgical books.

Of particular value to researchers of papal ceremonial are the sections concerning the person of the Supreme Pontiff, his attire and insignia, as well as the specific prerogatives associated with the papal office. Nabuco discusses elements of papal liturgical vesture, such as the fanon, subcinctorium, mantum, and triregnum, placing them within the context of ceremonial tradition and the regulations governing their use.

Ius Pontificalium is a valuable compendium for researchers of the ancient Roman liturgy, papal and episcopal ceremonial, and canon law. It enables one not only to become familiar with the norms governing pontifical celebrations but also to understand the hierarchical and legal logic that shaped the traditional ceremonial of the Roman Church, including the apostolic liturgy.

<object data-wp-bind--hidden="!state.hasPdfPreview" hidden class="wp-block-file__embed" data="https://caeremonialeromanum.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/Ius-Pontificalium.-Introductio-in-Caeremoniale-Episcoporum-1959.pdf" type="application/pdf" style="width:100%;height:600px" aria-label="Embed of <em>Ius Pontificalium. Léon Gromier, Commentaire du Caeremoniale Episcoporum [1959]

If one considers the so-called „intelligence” of Roman Church ceremonies, that is, the ability to grasp the internal logic of the rites, their historical evolution, and their interrelationships, then one of the foremost experts in this field was Monsignor Léon Gromier (1879-1965), a canon of the Vatican Basilica and a consultor to the Sacred Congregation of Rites. His Commentaire du Caeremoniale Episcoporum ranks among the most valuable modern commentaries on the episcopal ceremonial, distinguished not only by its level of detail but, above all, by its exceptionally insightful analysis of liturgical practice.

The author has adopted a method of commenting on the ceremonial provisions sequentially, paragraph by paragraph. The commentary is particularly valuable for its analysis of specific ceremonial details, in which the author juxtaposes the regulations found in liturgical books with the practices of the Roman Curia and ceremonial tradition. He does not limit himself to explaining the rubrics but analyzes their underlying meaning, points out inconsistencies in interpretation, and critically addresses arbitrary changes and unjustified departures from established (or, conversely, forgotten) practices.

Throughout the work, Gromier repeatedly refers to the papal liturgy, treating the practice of the Roman Curia as a crucial point of reference for interpreting the episcopal ceremonial. Consequently, his commentary reveals not only the normative aspect of the ceremonial but also the relationship between universal liturgical legislation and papal ceremonial practice.

Commentaire du Caeremoniale Episcoporum (1959)Download

Selected commentaries on specific liturgical books, primarily the Caeremoniale Romanum, the Caeremoniale Episcoporum, and the Pontificale Romanum, can prove invaluable for the study of papal liturgy and the ceremonial of the Apostolic See.
